Resources

  • Charting a Course Conference Series

  • Professional Parenthood: A Guide for Foster Care

  • Life After Foster Care

  • YIP (Youth In Progress):
Handbook for Youth in Foster Care YIP a initiative of the NYS Office of Children and Family Services comprised of youth currently and formerly of foster care, mentors, and advisors who are invested in impacting the NYS foster care system with the voices of youth. YIP has representation from youth throughout the NYS region and one of their first initiatives was the production of the Youth in Foster Care Handbook, a.k.a., the Handbook. The Handbook describes the rights and responsibilities of youth while in foster care and also describes what happens when a youth leaves foster care. The information represents the minimum NYS requirements (local county or agency may have some additional rules.) There is also a video that can be used to introduce the handbook. For more information click on www.youthinprogress.org . Both the Handbook and the video can be downloaded from this site.

  • Personal Finance Guides for Foster Youth
The Casey Foundation and the National Endowment for Financial Education jointly published this series of guidebooks expressly for use by foster children and teens to educate them about personal finance and empower them to make sound decisions about reaching their future goals. They were developed after speaking with foster parents, youth counselors, social workers, and other foster care professionals. The guidebooks include: I Know Where I'm Going (But Will My Cash Keep Up?): Part One and Two; Money Pals: Being Cool with Cash, Part One and Two; and, Caregiver's Handbook for Money Pals: "Being Cool with Cash" and "I Know Where I'm Going (But Will My Cash Keep Up?)”.
